Natural Fertilisers: A Complete Guide for UK Gardeners

Natural fertilisers work differently. When you switch to organic fertiliser, you're not just feeding your plants - you're feeding the whole system beneath them.

Nitrogen (N) - drives leafy growth, stem development and chlorophyll production. The nutrient plants consume in the largest quantity. Deficiency shows as pale, yellowing leaves 

Phosphorus (P) - supports root and shoot development. Critical at establishment and for flowering 

Potassium (K) - governs flowering, fruiting and cold hardiness. The nutrient to prioritise once flowers appear 

Most natural fertilisers lean towards one of these. The art of building a good programme is knowing which to reach for and when. 

The Main Types of Natural Fertiliser 

Compost 

The foundation of any organic garden. Good homemade compost improves soil structure, moisture retention and fertility all at once - and it's free. It won't have a dramatic NPK reading, but its contribution to long-term soil health is unmatched by anything you can buy. Apply generously before planting and as a mulch around actively growing plants. 

Manure 

Well-rotted manure from herbivores (cows, horses, sheep) is a rich organic food fertiliser with a broadly balanced NPK profile. Always use fully rotted material - fresh manure can burn roots and may introduce weed seeds. Apply in autumn or early spring before planting, working it into the top layer of soil. 

Chicken Manure Pellets 

Concentrated, convenient and effective. NPK around 4.5-1.5-2.5, making them one of the higher-nitrogen natural fertilisers readily available. Particularly good for hungry crops like brassicas, leeks and sweetcorn. They release slowly as soil organisms break them down, feeding plants steadily over several weeks. 

Blood, Fish and Bone 

A near-balanced NPK of around 5-5-6 - the closest thing to an all-purpose natural plant food in granular form. Good for general use across vegetable beds, borders and new plantings. Apply at soil preparation stage and as a top dressing during the growing season. 

Bone Meal 

High phosphorus (around 3.5-22-0), low nitrogen. The natural fertiliser of choice for establishing strong root systems - particularly valuable at planting time for trees, shrubs, perennials and root crops. Releases slowly, so apply a few weeks before planting if possible. 

Dried Blood 

Fast-acting nitrogen at around 12-0-0 - the most immediately available natural nitrogen source you can buy. Use as a top dressing around leafy crops like lettuce, kale and chard when growth looks sluggish. Apply sparingly; it acts quickly. 

Seaweed Fertiliser 

Available as both a granular meal and a liquid extract, and worth treating as two different products because they work differently. 

Seaweed meal (NPK roughly 1-0-2) works primarily as a long-term garden soil conditioner - its real value is in the trace elements, alginates and microbial stimulation it provides rather than its headline NPK figures. Apply to soil before planting. 

Liquid seaweed fertiliser is the faster-acting option and the one that earns its place as a cornerstone of a mixed organic programme. It works as a biostimulant - improving how plants absorb and use nutrients from every other feed you apply. Bocking 14 comfrey reaches an NPK of around 1.8-0.5-5.3 after six weeks of fermentation - that high potassium content makes it outstanding for fruiting crops once flowers appear. Cut leaves, pack into a bucket, weigh down and leave for four to six weeks.  

The resulting dark liquid dilutes into an excellent homemade potassium feed. One established comfrey plant can be cut four or five times per season. 

Nettle Tea 

Free, fast-acting and nitrogen-rich. Steep fresh nettle leaves in water for two to three weeks, dilute and apply to leafy crops. A useful supplement to any organic programme and a great use of the nettles that would otherwise end up on the compost heap.

Building a Natural Fertiliser Programme 

The transition from synthetic to natural fertilisers is straightforward if you approach it as a programme rather than a product swap. Here's how to structure it across the season: 

Early spring (March-April) - build the foundation 

Apply compost or well-rotted manure to all beds before planting. Work in bone meal around the root zones of new perennials, trees and shrubs. Begin liquid seaweed applications as plants come out of dormancy - this wakes up soil biology and primes plants for the season ahead. 

Spring into early summer (April-June) - establish and feed 

Use chicken manure pellets or blood, fish and bone around heavy-feeding crops at planting time. Begin fortnightly liquid seaweed applications once seedlings are established. For leafy crops showing slow growth, a light application of dried blood or nettle tea gives a fast nitrogen boost. 

Midsummer (June-August) - switch to potassium 

Once fruiting crops are flowering, switch your liquid feed emphasis to potassium. Comfrey liquid and organic sulphate of potash both deliver high-K nutrition for tomatoes, courgettes, peppers and soft fruit. Continue liquid seaweed throughout - it makes the potassium you're applying more available to the plant. 

Late summer into autumn (August-October) - close the season 

Apply compost as a mulch to all beds once crops are cleared. A final application of seaweed fertiliser in September feeds soil biology ahead of winter. Sow green manures like phacelia or clover on empty ground to fix nitrogen and protect bare soil. 

Winter (November-February) - rest the soil 

No feeding needed. Plants are dormant or semi-dormant and cannot use what's applied. This is the time to plan next season and build your compost reserves. 

Making the Transition: A Practical Note 

If you're currently using synthetic feeds, you don't need to stop overnight. The most effective transition is gradual: 

  • Replace your general-purpose granular feed with blood, fish and bone or chicken manure pellets
  • Add liquid seaweed to your routine alongside whatever you're currently using
  • Replace your tomato feed with comfrey liquid or organic sulphate of potash
  • Phase out any remaining synthetic inputs over one to two seasons as your soil biology rebuilds
