Is Seaweed a Viable Farm Fertiliser for UK Grassland?

Seaweed has been used on UK grassland for centuries - long before synthetic fertilisers existed. Today, with input costs rising and organic standards to meet, more farmers and smallholders are asking whether it still makes sense as a farm fertiliser. The short answer is yes - but the type of product you choose, and how you use it, determines whether you get real results. 

Here's what the evidence says, and where liquid seaweed fits into a practical UK organic grassland programme. 

What Does Seaweed Contain? 

Seaweed works in two ways: as a direct source of soil nutrients and as a biostimulant that improves how plants take up what's already in the soil. 

On the nutrient side, seaweed contains high concentrations of potassium, alongside nitrogen, phosphate, magnesium, sulphur and a wide range of micronutrients - all of which support grassland crops and grazing livestock. Research by SRUC (Scotland's Rural College) confirms it is particularly strong on potash, making it a good fit for potash-hungry crops like grass silage. FAS Scotland analysis shows that at 15t/ha, seaweed supplies 100% of the potash nutrients required, 14% of phosphate and around 6% of nitrogen for established grassland. 

As a biostimulant, seaweed contains natural plant hormones - auxins and cytokinins - that stimulate growth and improve nutrient uptake. Alginates in seaweed also help with maintaining soils structure and water retention. These are soil fertility benefits that no synthetic agricultural fertiliser delivers. 

Does It Improve Yields? 

UK research says yes. The James Hutton Institute, working with Innovate UK, found that seaweed-derived biostimulants significantly improve microbial diversity in the soil and increase crop yield and quality. Importantly, UK crop trials showed that seaweed improves nutrient use efficiency - meaning plants absorb more nitrogen and phosphorus from the inputs already in the ground. 

For organic farms where synthetic nitrogen isn't available, that efficiency gain matters. Seaweed won't replace your nitrogen programme - but it makes the inputs you do have work harder. That is the most cost-effective argument for using it. 

Is It OF&G Compliant?

How to Use It on Your Grassland 

Good management practices for liquid seaweed on UK organic grassland: 

Check soil pH first - for grassland, target 5.8 to 6.0 for full soil nutrients uptake. Lime before adding other inputs if needed 

Start in early spring - the first application aligned with active growth delivers the strongest biostimulant response 

Apply every 10-14 days through the grazing and silage season for consistent soil fertility improvement 

Use alongside your existing organic nitrogen inputs - slurry, FYM and green manures - not as a replacement
